Shivaratri

Every new day is becoming more difficult for me. Today is not an indifferent day. With lots of things going round my head I headed out to work. It’s Shivaratri today and there are kids on the streets blocking roads with strings and ropes. Children block our ways and unless they are paid they won’t let us go, this is a typical trend which I too used to indulge when I was a kid.

It was some couple of years back when I had no job and no money. I with a friend had to go to Balaju and there we were blocked by two small princesses. I did not have any money on me and I was a little embarrassed to have myself in that situation. I tried to convince them, whispering my problem but in vain. At last she might have been convinced and let us go. While we were some steps away, one of the small princesses came running towards me and hit me though I wasn’t hurt, she was happy for hitting me. She even said, “What a stupid fellow, you don’t even have a rupee with you”. I chuckled as my face reddened and I had to hurry off the place to encounter any more embarrassment as there were some other people coming on that way.

From that day onwards I am very careful on days like Shivaratri. Earlier today I was ready for the blockades. I kept some changes with me and headed towards the office. In my neighborhood, there were some three blockades and I gave them some money and also told them that this fee was for a whole day. They agreed. On the last blockade, a man on a motorcycle was rudely shouting at those little kids dragging their ropes with the bike and scolding at them. That was absolutely disturbing for me. There was another biker along me who happily, smilingly and cherishingly gave money to those kids. Looking at that rude guy I was saddened and again with a good fellow on my side I was delighted.

Yeah, giving money to those kids is not good but thinking about those days when we used to do the same, it’s not about spoiling kids or encouraging them to block our ways on this day. To me it’s just about fun and letting the kids be happy for at least a day. Same goes when kids come to play deusi and vailos in Tihar. I just remembered a friend who had just arrived home from abroad was found to be dancing with deusi vailo kids who did not even have a proper madal. It’s just about making kids happy and enjoying with their pleasure.

And while returning home I’m quite sure to have kids blocking my way and I’d be well prepared to bring a grin on their face.
